About the event

Congo Kids New Orleans, a project of Positive Vibrations Foundation, is proud to announce Congo Kids Drumming School at the Donald Harrison Sr. Museum/ Guardians Institute in partnership with Cherice Harrison-Nelson, Queen of Guardians of the Flame Maroon Society and Co-Founder of Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame.

This 5-week program is free and open to youth ages 5-10 and limited to 10 students. Each drum instructor will prepare students to perform one selection. Instructors will play lead and students will accompany. In addition to drumming lessons, the program includes a literacy component provided by Herreast J. Harrison (Big Chief Donald Harrison, Sr. Program Director) and opportunities for students to showcase their talent to their community. This program culminates with the live performance at the neighborhood Night-Out-Against-Crime event on October 16, 2018, 5:00-7:00pm at the Donald Harrison Sr. Museum.

9/29 Wendi Moore-O'Neal of Jaliyah Consulting | Freedom Singing using voice and body percussion (hands and feet)

10/6 Kerry Vessel, Big Chief Brian Nelson | New Orleans Indian Funk + Traditional Mardi Gras Indian Drumming (Tambourine) and Chants

10/13 All Drummers + Aaron Washington | Rehearsal

10/16 Tuesday Night Performance at National Night Out Against Crime (details TBA)
